The Slaughter Solution: Don’t Vote on It?

March 17, 2010

Currently the Democrats do not have the votes they need to pass their health care reform plan but Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D- NY) has come up with a solution that makes this little technicality a nonissue – pass it WITHOUT VOTING on it.

This political maneuver has, not surprisingly, gained the backing of Nancy Pelosi. The way it would work is that the House would vote on the “Slaughter Rule” which would deem the Senate healthcare bill passed. This would allow the Senate version to pass in the House in an effort to keep House Democrats from having to specifically vote for that bill. This “self executing rule” is gaining popularity among House Democrats who know that their constituents are against this bill and fear the repercussions at the polls in November.

Pelosi has publicly stated her fondness for this questionable tactic, “I like it, because people don’t have to vote on the Senate bill.”
The Democrats are clearly determined to attempt to continue their government takeover of health care at any cost and in their minds Democracy may just be a necessary casualty of the war.
